Appraisals

What Is An Insurance Appraisal?

An insurance appraisal is a policy-based process used to resolve disagreements over the amount of loss. It is not a coverage determination, but a structured method for establishing value when parties differ on scope or cost. The goal of appraisal is to reach a fair and defensible resolution grounded in facts and documentation.

Why Independent Appraisal Matters

An effective appraisal relies on objectivity, experience, and respect for the process. Independent appraisal helps reduce emotion, limit escalation, and bring clarity to complex claims. When handled correctly, it supports fair outcomes and allows all parties to move forward with confidence.

When Appraisal is Appropriate

Appraisal is typically appropriate when the insurer and the policyholder agree that a loss is covered but cannot agree on the value of the damage. It is often used when negotiations stall or when differing methodologies prevent resolution. Invoking appraisal allows the claim to move forward within a defined framework rather than remaining at an impass.

Appraisal Process Explained

Step 1:

Appraiser Appointment

Each party appoints an appraiser to independently evaluate the loss and attempt to reach agreement on the amount of loss.

Step 2:

Umpire Engagement

If the appraisers are unable to reach agreement, an impartial umpire is engaged to review the disputed differences and assist in resolving the matter.

Step 3:

Resolution

eXcell Forensics serves in both appraiser and umpire roles, always with a commitment to objectivity and respect for the appraisal process. Our focus is on supporting efficient resolution without unnecessary escalation.
